2022 Contingent Faculty Report
This new report, the third in a series from the American Federation of Teachers, further documents the troubling reality faced by the millions of professional educators who make up the ranks of contingent and adjunct faculty at the nation’s colleges and universities. This report illustrates how contingent faculty struggle with low pay (and mirroring AAUP’s data on Part-Time Faculty Pay), inadequate access to benefits, little or no job security, and a lack of professional respect. Despite all this, the contingent faculty members who responded to this survey continue to prioritize students. The AFT and its affiliates remain committed to engaging in political advocacy, organizing and collective bargaining to win equitable treatment of contingent faculty, with an eye toward social justice regarding their work, their students and the communities our members serve.
