AFT members preserve history through community service project

AFT members gathered this morning to preserve history at Freedmen’s Town, a once-thriving community in Houston founded by formerly enslaved families that has faced decades of deterioration.

Together We Rise: Citizenship clinic and community fair celebrate solidarity

The mood was upbeat, joyful and full of hope at the Community Fair and Together We Rise Citizenship Clinic Sunday. The event, sponsored by the AFT, Texas AFT, Texas AFL-CIO and AFT locals from the Houston area, featured health screenings, a job fair plus games, food and a book giveaway for families. There was also legal assistance for people preparing to apply for U.S. citizenship.

Despite claims to the contrary, voucher programs negatively impact student learning and siphon critical resources from public schools according to at a panel discussion hosted by Texas AFT at the AFT convention in Houston.

Delegates will tackle resolutions ranging from artificial intelligence to right-wing extremism. We’ll celebrate our union’s growth and spotlight the successes of the AFT’s campaigns to create a better life for all.
