New Mexico: Keep the Promise for Kids
The transition to a new Republican governor in New Mexico has brought an assault on public education in the state, with proposals to cut more than $70 million from K-12 education, slash funds for higher education and workforce development; close early childhood education centers and programs that working families depend on; cut school nurses, librarians and other vital school staff; and impose a rating system for schools based solely on test scores. AFT New Mexico has joined with other community groups in the "Keep the Promise for New Mexico's Future" coalition that has developed a balanced plan to raise revenues for public schools and improve outcomes for children.
