Public Employees: Do you think it is important for public employees to contact their elected officials about funding for public services? Why or why not?

Public employees should contact elected officials to remind them that without us, they would not be elected officials. I know it is currently fashionable to bash public employees, but we should also remind elected officials to protect us--and stand up to the public we serve, protect, educate and service. Enough with the cutting of budgets and staffing levels.

I think it is important to contact public officials about funding for public services because I am on the front line of providing such services to New York State clients. I can tell them about the great work we do in aiding clients who are in dire straits and for whom the state services are their last hope.

I feel it is important for public employees to share their working knowledge of their particular organization and communicate their comments with elected officals so the officals will be well informed--whether a change will help or hinder the organization. There is so much abuse [among] claimants in the unemployment department [that] had the officals taken the time to talk to the workers, the representatives would know how to combat these abuses, save money and insure that the money goes to the people who truly are in need.

It is called democracy. If we the people do not speak up then all that is left is the vested interests. If we do not ask, we will not receive.

Money talks, BS walks. If you help 'em when they need you, they might listen to you, maybe even "assist" you.... Contact 'em? Naive.

Yes, it lets our elected officials know that there are concerned citizens advocating for the rights and best interests of our society and the people in it.

It is extremely important that elected officials hear from their consituents. Currently, there are several federal legislative pieces on the table that could potentially have huge impacts on unionized workers. If union workers don't speak out and stick together than who would? These are the people we back, support, and advocate sometimes by holding phone banks or going door to door to gain mass support for those candidates. It is important for them to hear firsthand accounts of why that support is important to the communities they represent, as well as their constituents.

I believe all constituents should contact their elected officials about funding for public services! I also believe that all constituents should contact these same officials and encourage them to develop programs that finally control the fraud that is destroying the public services efforts!

Yes, it is important, so that elected officials do not miss any opportunities to fund important services via alternative means, or to keep from cutting services when it is not necessary to do so.

Yes. I think it's important that public employees be allowed to contact their elected officials about funding and other functional attributes of public services. Public employees are the 'front line' workers. Who better to assess the status and performance of public services than those in the practice. I also understand that public officials might need to weigh costs and benefits during these tight fiscal times. I just hope these evaluations are done in a scientific and rigorous manner, and that they involve receiving input from employees of public services. Public employees and elected officials work to serve the people of New York state.

Yes. Elected officials are supposed to represent the people. They need to know what the people want and, hopefully, they will vote for the people.

Most certainly. Just as commercial advertisements on print, radio, TV, and other electronic media influence our buying behavior, a short phone call, faxed letter or other type of communication with your elected representatives has a tremendous influence on their thinking and voting behavior.

I think it is important because it lets the elected officials know that someone is paying attention to what they are doing, unlike most of the general public. Although I don't back every Democrat issue like the unions do, i.e. health care!

Union members should inform their representatives to stop wasteful spending at the state and federal levels. Reduce individual and corporate income taxes to spur growth. End or reduce entitlements. The union and politicians should not support card check, nor the perverted health care reform bills now in the Senate and Congress. Government officials should embrace fiscal conservatism and absolute term limits on every elected official.

Yes. Every citizen should contact their elected officials. It is important for the elected officials to know how his/her constituents feel about issues. Also, public employees, based on their employment, have additional knowledge about issues they can impart on elected officials.

Yes, it is very important to contact our elected officials. Union membership must be involved to state their case and let lawmakers know how the rank and file feel about issues that concern them. If the membership is not involved in the procces, who do we leave it up to? The lobbyists? As union members, we must be in control of the decisions that affect our futures.

Of course, because the public employee can describe from his/her experience what is needed, what happens when funds are cut, how money could be better spent. The employee viewpoint is crucial to budget decisions; it is the real world knowledge and experience that elected officials need to hear.

Yes. Public employees are citizens who vote for public officials. We pay taxes. Therefore, we should be able to contact our public officials regarding funding for public services.

I think it is very important to contact elected officials. I feel that the New Yor State Legislature needs to know they need to provide adequate funding so we can do our jobs. We are constantly reading in the newspaper and online about how unions are the reason the state is in such a fiscal mess, then we read about how we aren't doing our job of keeping up our highways and bridges. In actuality, it is the Legislature and Governor that are hindering us from doing what we do best, but it is easier for the "taxpayers" to blame union workers rather than blame the lying state representives they elected on false promises.

Sometimes. It depends on how well we understand the issue and how it relates to the big picture. It's important to pick your battles.

I absolutely do. Leaders are paid to be advocates for their members. Elected officials know that and take their lobbying with a grain of salt. When public employees & union members contact their elected officials it sends a different message. It tells them that people care enough about an issue to reach out, even if it's an inconvenience. People need to stop being passive bystanders with regard to their fate and future as employees. If they aren't willing to speak up for themselves then why would an elected official stick their neck out for them?!

I think it is very important that public employees have as much input as possible. They are on the front line all the time. They can give you direct areas of improvement and safety.

What's really important is that unions stop supporting legislation that their membership does not want, such as Obama's health care bill, which will bankrupt this nation!!!
