General: How you have been affected in this economy and what you want to hear from President Obama during his State of the Union address?

Although there have been great gains, we started at such a low level in this economy that those of us near the bottom are still suffering. As a paraprofessional working in Atlanta Public Schools, our duties and responsibilities have increased, but our salaries have been frozen for the last four or five years, yet, my copay and medications rise on an annual basis. I recently had surgery and found myself deeply in debt in spite of the high premiums and the sacrifice I make to invest in AFLAC. HELP!!!!!

I would like him to fess-up that he has done a totally inadequate job running this once great country for the past 3 years & that he is stepping down as President; also that since Joe Biden is inadequate to assume the presidency that the Speaker of the House will be sworn-in the next day.

The effect of President Obama's national education policy has been devastating to public education. As a former Central Falls, RI teacher, I am appalled that the federal government has reached its hand into local school districts via the "Race to the Top" initiative. Central Falls HS has been decimated. Arne Duncan and President Obama personally commented on how pleased they were that the 89 teachers in the district were fired, without ever having stepped foot into the poorest town in the smallest state. Obama's push for corporate charter schools is equally corrupt. Pushing for corporate control of local education funds (via RTTT) is wrong.

I am a grandmother in PA who is worried sick about our children's health. Fracking has made people sick and poisoned rivers and aquifers here and elsewhere. Our governor and legislature have sold us out. We need more EPA protection and we need to slow this runaway train down everywhere! We don't want to live in "Gasland." We also need the President's assurance that he will hang with the 99% and not bow to big oil and gas, big bankis and the 1% that "want it all." This is supposed to be GOVERNMENT BY AND FOR THE PEOPLE!

I am a teaching assistant with Seattle Public Schools and though I have a teaching certificate and a masters in Special Education, I cannot secure a real teaching job. I earn only $34G a year and now must work a second part-time job, but am still not able to meet my living expenses. Soon I will have the extra expense of repaying the student loans I had to take out in order to get said teaching certificate AND masters degree. I would like to see Pres. Obama address the staggering student debt many of us have to take on in order to not be stuck forever in minimum wage jobs and address the issue that with everything being standardds based t

After being ripped from my position as a librarian in the same elementary school for 25 years because of the 5.5billion dollar cuts in education in the state of Texas. I would first pray that President Obama does not commend the teachers again for their hard work. The day after he did it last year we were under attack and it has never ended. Just thank the Republicans for the great job they are doing and maybe they will attack themselves.

I have raised four sons while working 24 years for DPS. Since the salary reduction that rolled my salary back to that of 2002, I have had to make an early hardship withdrawal on my annuity account to bale my home out for foreclosure, amd to pay off other debts. This is the fifth year of supporting my 32 year old special needs son, who does not qualify for SSI but cannot find employment and has fallen off the unemployment grid (like many other Detroiters). The true number of unemployment is understated because of those whose unemployment has run out and unless someone assist them, they would be homeless.

My family has lost money in deposits on a wedding for our college graduate daughter because neither she or her fiancee can find employment along with mental health care bills as a result of the depression brought on by the pressure of no job, college loans to pay, car payments, etc. I would like to hear more money and jobs will be developed for our struggling Americans and less to defense or foreign countries. Also, I'd like to hear there is a hold off on National Health Care. There needs to be significant statistics to show things are really changing for the better and some ideas on how to get the two parties to work together.

I never hear any of the politicians speak on Welfare reform. Some people have been on assistance for years. I don't mind to work to supply my basic needs but I'm really tired of working to take care of others who don't want to work. If those that are "Occupy Wall Street" patrons were working, they wouldn't have time to occupy public places for days on end.

How will Early Childhood Education be continued to be supported at the Federal Level? Currently there are are the Early Learning Challenge Grants from Race to the Top and continuation of funding for Head Start but what else is being thought about at the Federal Level?

I would like the President to acknowledge the attack on unions, which is an attack on middle class America. To warn the population that right to work is really the right to work for less. Unions are not the enemy, they are the tool to raise the standard of living for all Americans.

I have taught school for many years and always felt a sense of gratification because of that. I will probably retire after next year even though I am not prepared to financially. I have always taken care of all my bills, taxes, and other financial responsibilities cutting corners on my needs as I had to. Even with attention to my paticular needs in the retirement years (i.e. tax-sheltered annuity) to supplement my normal retirement, I know that many necessary costs will not be covered. How does a citizen who has done nothing but give back to society come to this end in a country that is so powerful??

Because we no longer believe that living in this country is worth paying money for (i.e. no new taxes) I have seen a consistent backtracking of funding for schools over the past few years. I am an Adjunct Professor and STEM researcher, and have been for 10 years. Mr. President, if you want the country to be educated for a strong future in STEM, business, geography and the arts, why have we rescinded the promise to all Americans for a free quality education, and continued to casualize the teaching profession with a 2-tiered pay and benefits system for the educators and researchers at all levels of our educational system?

I would like President Obama to first state that the STIMULUS WORKED. If he did not initiate this we would be in a full blown depression. I would like him to support Public Education. Site how it works. Federally fund Special Education and other Vocational programs that work. State that he will tax the Billionaires but leave middle class and poor alone. Reduce spending in the Military. Stop the War in Afghanistan. Continue to support GREEN jobs and GREEN manufacturing plants right here in America. Promote wind and solar manufacturing NOW. Help make it a reality.

In this time of unrest, educators need to know that President Obama is listening to us. No more mixed messages from him. His educational policies need to align with research-based best practices, not with the alleged reform, which begins with charter schools and ends with privatization. His educational policies should not look like Right-Wing Conservative talking points. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan should be replaced by a true educator.

STOP PLAYING POLITICS W/PEOPLE'S LIVES! If this country has made you rich, then pay the country back with a fair share of taxes the way it used to be when we were in true prosperity. How many cars, homes and luxuries do you need? When the infrastructure and economy is crumbling and 99% of the country is hurting financially, it seems treasonous to be so selfish. It's also time for elected officials to take cuts in their salaries & benefits: learn how the rest of us live--you're hopelessly out of touch about the real world, how much everything costs, the daily difficulties faced by the people who elected each of you.

We need help with jobs. You need to give us hope to the future and that things are going to get better not worse. Your 4 years in the office have seen jobs lost. Home's lost to for closer. What hope do we have for the future? Unions are under attack. Many have given concessions with no hope of getting those things back. We need better not worse conditons. Show the people just above poverty (the working poor) what you are going to do for us!!!!!!

The economic conditions have greatly affeted my daughters. One is a college gratuate with a Master's degree, a teacher for 15 years. She is the major breadwinner in the family.with daughter who is a freshman at college and a 7year old, too. The cuts to her salary and increses in her cost of healthcare have drastically impacted the family's financial standing. They are concerned about paying their mortgage and being able to afford the college tuition for the older child. My other daughter, also a college graduate, worked in the travel industry for many years. She is now unemployed with her unemployment running out. Help!

Personally, I have witnessed the shrinking of my purchasing power with the dollar. Others are much worse off through being either unemployed or underemployed. President Obama can greatly assist in rebuilding the economy by getting rid of the massive amount of regulation(s) that he has tied around business since coming into office.

I have been a teacher my whole life which, I knew from the get-go, would not make me rich. Unfortunately, my parent loans for my children to go to college, and their having debts as well, has resulted in my spending my retirement in debt and paying >$500/month for those parent loans. My parents worked their lives saving, being very frugal, using things from their bridal shower to this very day over 67 years later, only to find that their savings will be going to the nursing home for their care. I do not have the skills nor the facility to care for them myself, plus I want them to be safe. Our future holds only poverty. It just is not fair

The President needs to address the state of the economy and the dire need to fund education in our country. We are loosing classified staff and our jobs are getting more difficult. My district will have to cut $40 million for our school budget this year. That will be classified staff and teachers and class sizes will get larger. In these difficult times we need leaders who can be the change and make difficult decisions for the 99% of Americans. He ran on change and we need it starting at the top. We have to balance our budget by law and we will loose good teachers and staff. Cherise Arthur carthur799@gmail.com
