The AFT maintains relations with democratic trade unions throughout the world. For many years, we have provided technical assistance and other support, as requested, to new unions in emerging democracies. Our goal is to help each of these unions become a strong voice for the employees they represent in their countries. Read about several of our international projects.
AFT training includes democratic union leadership development, organizing, negotiating skills, communication skills, political action, strategic planning and training of trainers. Some union-to-union projects include improving the teaching of democracy and civics. Volunteer trainers are AFT local, state and national union leaders, member activists and staff specialists.
To finance these programs, the AFT has established an International Democracy Fund. Other AFT union-to-union programs are organized in cooperation with the AFL-CIO's Solidarity Center; Education International, the global union of workers in education; and Public Services International, a worldwide federation of public service unions.
