More on two stories that appeared in Reporter during the past year:
DIANE ADLOFF, the school nurse and Army reservist from Cleveland deployed to a combat hospital in Iraq last year (May/June 2007), is back in the saddle at home, caring for students. The grandmother of three says it was wonderful and "sometimes overwhelming" to see thousands of books pour in from AFT members for a program in which soldiers send home videos of themselves reading to children.
TESTS MEASURING HEAT and humidity aboard Louisiana school buses last August paid off (January/February 2008). Members of the Caddo Federation of Teachers and Support Personnel, despite an effort to silence them, took their case public that 116-degree temperatures on buses are unacceptable. Result: The first day of school for the coming school year has been moved back one week.
