Honeyoe, N.Y., High School Graduate Wins Robert G. Porter Scholarship

CHICAGO – Marcus N. Way, a 2008 graduate of Honeoye Central High School in Honeoye, N.Y., is one of four highly accomplished high school seniors to receive the Robert G. Porter Scholarship awarded by the American Federation of Teachers.

Each year, the AFT presents an $8,000 scholarship to each of four outstanding high school seniors who are the children of AFT members. Recipients must show outstanding service to their community and plan to pursue a career in labor, education, health or government service. The AFT will recognize the recipients during the union’s biennial national convention, held July 11-14 in Chicago.

Way participated in his high school’s wind ensemble, jazz band, Science Olympiad, and French club. He also volunteered as a coach for younger players at Line Drive Baseball School, a locally owned baseball instruction facility. Of his work at the baseball school, Way said, “The experience has been indispensable for me. I have learned a great deal about kids, about baseball, about teaching, and about myself. It has been said that the best way to learn is to teach, and that is certainly true of this experience.”

The Robert G. Porter Scholars Program is named in honor of the late secretary-treasurer of the AFT, who served for more than 30 years. Porter was known for his commitment to improving the quality of public education and public service.

Way’s mother, Sonja Way, is a member of the Honeoye Teachers Association.

Marcus Way lives in Naples, N.Y., and will be attending Emory University in the fall, where he plans to study medicine.
