Statement by Edward J. McElroy,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
on the No Child Left Behind Recommendations
of the 2007 State Teachers of the Year
WASHINGTON, D.C – We are pleased that these honorees are demanding that Congress listen to teachers as it prepares to reauthorize No Child Left Behind.
The recommendations are thoughtful, constructive and based on teachers’ experiences. Many of the recommendations correspond with those of the AFT. The Teacher of the Year honorees and the AFT call for tracking students’ progress through growth models, providing test results to teachers in a timely manner, helping teachers learn to use test results to improve instruction, replacing current sanctions with proven methods for improving teaching and learning, and fully funding No Child Left Behind.
We congratulate these teachers not only for their success in the classroom but also for taking action outside the classroom to ensure that federal education policies support good teaching and learning.
The AFT’s recommendations are available at www.aft.org/NCLBrecs.pdf.
