Statement by Edward J. McElroy,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
On President Bush’s Decision To Reinstate Davis-Bacon Act Protections
In Areas Affected by Hurricane Katrina

WASHINGTON, D.C. – When President Bush suspended the Davis-Bacon Act for federally funded construction projects in the Gulf Region, the AFT criticized the action as exploitative and cruel.  We are pleased that the president today reversed his earlier, misguided decision and reinstated the prevailing wage protections.  Our hope is that the president's reversal on Davis-Bacon sends a message to those seeking to make the Gulf Region a laboratory for anti-worker policies.
