When a postsecondary credential is all but required to enter the middle class, it’s wrong to allow predatory institutions marketing worthless degrees to stick students with crippling debt and an uncertain future. The American Federation of Teachers has been addressing this issue for years, but the recent collapse of large school chains like Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech have escalated the crisis. It is more important than ever that students have complete and accurate information about their rights, including the information linked on this page about loan discharge and transfer. It is also vital that the Department of Education identifies, investigates and sanctions harmful programs funded by taxpayer dollars.

WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ITT TECH’S CLOSURE

Important information for students who recently attended ITT Tech:

  • You may be eligible to have your federal student loans canceled if you were attending ITT Tech in May, June, July, August or September of 2016.
  • Note that transferring any credits to another institution may make you lose your right to a refund.
  • Therefore it is important not to rush into any decisions about next steps – be wary of any special “limited time” deals or temporary scholarships that are designed to force a quick decision. Some of the other colleges recruiting you may be under federal and/or state investigation for deception.

  • If you’re unsure of your federal loan debt, you can look it up online at www.nslds.ed.gov (PIN needed) to find out what you owe and find contact information for your loan servicer.
