Lawrence Teachers Donate Money to Buy Uniform Shirts for Oliver Students

Media Invited to Attend as Shirts Are Distributed on Saturday

LAWRENCE, Mass.—Teachers at the new Oliver Partnership School donated their classroom supply money to help purchase two uniform shirts for every Oliver student. The shirts will be handed out on Saturday.

The Oliver Partnership School, which opens Aug. 21, is a labor-management-community school for grades 1-5 that will provide wraparound services to meet the social and academic needs of its 500 students.

"The teachers wanted to do something special for the students to start the year off right," said Frank McLaughlin, president of the Lawrence Teachers' Union.

All of the 29 classroom teachers, as well as McLaughlin, who teaches at a different school, donated their $100 stipends for classroom supplies to help purchase two uniform shirts for each child. The American Federation of Teachers also kicked in $1,000; AFT Massachusetts donated $300; and the Lawrence Firefighters Union, Local 146, contributed $100. Oliver's co-leaders ordered classroom supplies from their small discretionary budget to cover teachers' needs.
