AFT Statement Condemning School Massacre in Nigeria
WASHINGTON—Statement of AFT President Randi Weingarten on the massacre of 29 students and a teacher at a secondary school in Nigeria.
"The cold-blooded murder of these innocent children and their teacher was an attack of unimaginable savagery. I join with leaders in Nigeria and elsewhere around the world to condemn this senseless act by members of the violent religious sect, Boko Haram.
"This is just the latest tragedy in a spate of killings of defenseless young pupils in Nigeria by terrorists who seek to forbid 'Western education' and have killed scores of students in recent months. Such attacks on schools are barbaric and have no place in any civilized society.
"Every child must be free to go to school and have access to basic education. Those responsible for these horrific killings must be brought to justice. No religion demands the callous murder of children."
