American Federation of Teachers Convention Kicks into High Gear

Diane Ravitch, UAW President Bob King Among Featured Speakers

WASHINGTON—The American Federation of Teachers 2012 convention continues today, July 28, at Cobo Center in Detroit and features speeches from United Auto Workers president Bob King, historian of education at New York University and best-selling author Diane Ravitch, and Detroit Branch NAACP President Rev. Wendell Anthony.

Additionally, AFT president Randi Weingarten will discuss two great examples of solution-driven unionism. First, she will officially launch Share My Lesson, the AFT's partnership with British corporation TES Connect to create the largest online community for U.S. teachers to collaborate and share teaching resources and innovative ideas, with a significant emphasis on resources supporting implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. Weingarten will also discuss the union's partnership with First Book to ensure that children have access to an essential building block of literacy—their very own books.

Later, Weingarten will join AFT delegates from across the country and Michigan labor and community activists to knock on doors and talk with voters about protecting the jobs and bargaining rights of Michigan workers. This solidarity event will build support for November's ballot initiative that will enshrine collective bargaining rights in the Michigan Constitution and ensure workplace fairness.

Essential policy items on today's convention schedule include:

Approving a new American Federation of Teachers mission statement that emphasizes the organization's commitment to championing fairness, democracy, economic opportunity, and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for our students, their families and our communities.Passing a resolution calling for an end to the fixation on high-stakes testing and the restoration of balance to public education by prioritizing high-quality instruction informed by appropriate and useful assessments.Passing a resolution affirming the need for infrastructure and public service investment to create jobs as the AFT works to improve public education, prepare students for work and improve the outlook of the U.S. economy in the 21st century.
