‘Investing in Innovation’ Grant Will Support
 AFT Educational Foundation’s Groundbreaking Work on
 Teacher Development and Evaluation

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Education Department announced today that the American Federation of Teachers will officially receive a $5 million competitive Investing in Innovation (i3) grant to implement bold and comprehensive teacher development and evaluation systems in New York and Rhode Island.

The AFT has raised the $1 million in matching funds required under the i3 grant program.

“This grant is confirmation of our work as innovators and leaders in education reform,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “The i3 funds will allow us to expand our current efforts to boost student achievement by building evaluation systems that help develop great teachers with the support and resources they need.”

The AFT Educational Foundation’s winning proposal focused on the Educator Evaluation for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (E3TL) Consortium, which was jointly formed by the New York State United Teachers and the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers. The consortium is helping districts implement the performance-based teacher development and evaluation systems that were designed with startup funding provided by an AFT Innovation Fund grant. The consortium will work in 10 districts across the two states.

“Strong teacher development and evaluation systems are essential to ensuring that every public school can offer all students a great teaching and learning environment that is provided by good teachers and supported by good leaders,” Weingarten said. “This grant will help New York and Rhode Island move forward to implement their groundbreaking teacher development and evaluation models that will help support and develop excellent teachers for our children.”
