AFT food service member to compete on 'Chopped'
The AFT's own Lynette Thomas, a food service manager in St. Martin Parish, La., will appear on the Food Network's "Chopped" on Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. Eastern time. Thomas, a member of the St. Martin Federation of Teachers and School Employees who works at St. Martinville Primary School, will compete with three other school chefs on a special episode of the show. (Watch a preview.) Thomas is one of the AFT's 2012 Everyday Heroes.
Not only will these school chefs show off their culinary skills, but the episode also will shine a light on the importance of having nutritious school lunch and breakfast programs to help students stay focused on learning and succeeding in school.
In honor of Thomas and all the food nutrition staff around the country who work so hard to provide healthy and delicious food on tight budgets to public school students, we are asking members to submit a kid-friendly, budget-friendly recipe for a healthy eating cookbook the AFT is compiling and will make available online. The book will include Thomas's famous red beans and rice recipe—a favorite with her students. Submit your favorite healthy recipe.
