School Bus Safety
Each year, public school buses travel some 4.2 billion miles as they transport students to and from campuses, field trips and other activities. In the course of these travels, however, only a small number of children are injured or killed in accidents. Based on a per-mile comparison, school buses are four times safer than passenger cars. Yet, even the smallest number of school bus-related deaths is unacceptable to the AFT and its members. School bus drivers and other members of the AFT believe that more must be done to protect children.
