Keith R. Johnson
AFT Vice President
Keith R. Johnson is a native of Detroit, a graduate of the Detroit public schools and Wayne State University. He is the president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT).
Johnson began his career as a substitute teacher in 1980 until becoming a secondary social studies teacher, specializing in government and history. While teaching high school government at Detroit’s Western International High School, he was elected the local building representative and immediately became active with AFT’s Local 231 in Detroit as a delegate to the conventions of the AFT and the then-Michigan Federation of Teachers (now AFT Michigan). Johnson was brought to the DFT offices as a labor relations administrator in 1993.
Johnson also served on the DFT negotiating team in 1994 and became the primary writer of contract language during the negotiations of 1997. He remained an integral part of the DFT’s negotiating team in 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2006, and became the chief negotiator for the DFT in 2009 when he assumed the DFT presidency.
