Marietta A. English

Marietta English is president of the Baltimore Teachers Union (BTU) Teachers Chapter fighting for fair wages and improved working conditions for Baltimore City public school teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel.

English actively represents Baltimore teachers, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel in the state capital and at Baltimore school headquarters and works for change and fairness in the classroom. She supports the BTU Professional Development Center (PDC), where members engage in career development seminars and workshops and can receive supplies for their classrooms and other services. The BTU-PDC also holds seminars and workshops for members.

English not only has been a classroom teacher, she has also worked as a consulting teacher and a mentor. She has taught all grades from pre-K through grade 8, and has worked as a special education instructor.

English also is president of AFT-Maryland and is a member of several civic, social and cultural organizations. She has served as president of the Metro-Baltimore Alliance of Black School Educators (MBABSE) and is currently that organization’s liaison to the North American Association for Environmental Education. She is the past president of the Maryland State Alliance of Black School Educators and currently serves on the board of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) as the recording secretary.

A subscribing life member of the NAACP, English has served as that organization’s youth director and is the chairperson of the Baltimore County chapter of ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological & Scientific Olympics).

English is a graduate of Morgan State University and the University of Maryland, College Park.
