Introducing Kamala Harris — literally
Pittsburgh special education teacher Brittany Shoup was thrilled when she was chosen to introduce Vice President and presidential candidate Kamala Harris at the AFT convention.
The American Federation of Teachers executive council, the body representing the union’s 1.72 million educators, higher education professionals, healthcare workers and public employees, unanimously adopted an omnibus statement addressing the war in the Middle East and its impact on the United States.
AFT shows up for bilingual education
Scores of AFT leaders and members flocked to New Orleans March 28-30 for the National Association for Bilingual Education’s 53rd International Bilingual Education Conference, where our union ran no fewer than 18 workshops, headlined several featured sessions, offered a full day of parent engagement sessions and celebrated literacy with elementary school book giveaways that included author appearances and readings. The theme for the week: Bilingualism is a superpower.

Here’s to our mentors, guides and heroes
A year ago, the AFT launched our Real Solutions for Kids and Communities campaign to help children bounce back and thrive after the disruptions caused by COVID-19, and to combat the harmful culture war attacks on public education. Over the past year, the campaign has taken us to more than 20 states, where we’ve witnessed the power of experiential learning firsthand.
The PSRP Bill of Rights resolution passed unanimously with cheers and a standing ovation at the close of the afternoon general session at the AFT convention in Houston.
During the general sessions on July 24, AFT President Randi Weingarten took some time to introduce delegates to the work of the AFT’s divisions, starting with the healthcare division. Weingarten noted that the AFT is now the second-largest nurses union in the country.
